Documents Required to Sell a Used Car in India: Checklist

The papers you need to sell a used car in India, including RC, insurance, PUC, transfer forms, loan closure papers and ID proof, explained in a simple checklist.

Car key and a folder of ownership papers on a desk, ready for a used car sale

To sell a used car in India, you normally need the Registration Certificate (RC), a valid insurance policy, a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, your ID and address proof, and the signed transfer forms. Keep the service records and the duplicate key ready as well. Rules and accepted documents vary a little by state, so confirm the details with your RTO.

Missing papers are one of the main reasons a sale stalls. Buyers want to see that the car is legally yours to sell and that it can be transferred. Preparing the file before you list makes the process faster for both sides.

Which documents do you need for every used car sale?

Most sales need the same core set of documents, whatever the make or model. Gather them before you publish the listing so you can answer buyer questions quickly.

  • Original RC book or smart card, with the owner name matching your ID
  • Valid insurance policy, with the policy copy and expiry date noted
  • Valid PUC certificate from an authorised centre
  • Your ID proof and address proof
  • Service records, invoices and the owner manual

Keep these documents together in one folder before the first test drive.

Keep these in one folder, with photocopies for early enquiries. Share originals only when a buyer is serious and the handover is close. For the wider selling process, see how to sell your car online in India.

What does the RC need to show before you sell?

The RC confirms who owns the car and whether a loan is attached to it. Check that the owner name, chassis number, engine number and registration number match the car in front of you. Any mismatch should be resolved before you sell.

The RC may show a hypothecation entry if a financier still holds a claim on the car. If you see one, you need the loan closure process before you can complete the transfer. Read the section on loans below before you agree a price.

What paperwork do you need if the car has a loan?

If the car is financed, the loan must be closed and the financier must remove its hypothecation from the RC. Once the loan is cleared, the financier issues a loan closure letter, commonly called Form 35, along with the release of its claim. Ask your bank or financier for the exact documents they issue and how long it takes.

Start this process early. Some financiers take time to release the RC, which can delay your sale. Do not hand over the car as if the loan is closed until you have the written proof.

Check for unpaid traffic challans and pending road tax before you list. Unresolved dues can hold up the transfer, and buyers often ask whether the car is free of pending notices. Ask your RTO or the relevant transport department how to check the vehicle's status in your state.

Which identity and address proofs does the seller need?

You need valid proof of identity and address that matches the owner details on the RC. Commonly accepted documents include Aadhaar, a passport, a driving licence or a voter ID. A PAN card is useful, but it is not always accepted as address proof on its own.

Confirm which documents your RTO accepts for the transfer. If you have moved since the car was registered, update your address with the RTO before you sell. A buyer's copy of their ID also goes into the transfer file.

How do Form 29 and Form 30 fit into the sale?

Form 29 is the notice of transfer of ownership that the seller submits to the RTO. Form 30 is the application for transfer of ownership that the buyer submits. Both forms are filed under the Motor Vehicles Act, and both must be completed for the transfer to be recorded.

Five steps for the paperwork after selling a used car in India, from confirming buyer details to filing the transfer forms
File the transfer forms promptly, following the process in your state.

The seller and buyer should sign the forms and keep copies. File them within the time allowed in your state, which is generally a short period after the sale. The exact deadline and the online options depend on your RTO. For the detailed steps, read RC transfer after selling a car in India.

Before you sign any transfer form, read every field and check it against the RC. Fill in the buyer's name exactly as it appears on their ID, and use the same spelling on the sale agreement. Sign in the places the form asks for, and keep one signed copy for your records. Corrections made after signing often need fresh signatures, so get the details right first time.

What about insurance, PUC and road tax?

A valid insurance policy and PUC certificate are expected at the handover. Insurance usually follows the vehicle, so ask your insurer how to transfer or close the policy and keep the answer in writing. A current PUC certificate shows the car meets emission standards at the time of the test.

Road tax receipts and service records help the buyer understand the car's history. They are not always mandatory for the transfer, but they build trust and make your listing stronger. Keep the receipts in the same folder as the RC.

If a document is missing, do not guess or create a substitute. Contact the issuing office, such as your insurer, the PUC centre or the RTO, and ask for a duplicate or a replacement. Tell the buyer honestly about the timeline, and agree on a handover only after the paperwork is in order. Honest communication at this stage prevents disputes later.

How should you organise and share documents safely?

Keep the originals in a secure place at home. Scan or photograph every document and store the copies in a private folder on your phone or computer. Use the scans for early enquiries and keep the originals for the final handover.

Share originals only at the final handover and keep copies for your own file.

Do not post full copies of your ID, RC or insurance documents in public comments. Share them only with a buyer who has agreed to the sale. When you upload RC and insurance details to a listing on IndCars99, follow the listing steps and keep your personal information limited to what the process asks for.

Once your documents are ready, list your car for sale on IndCars99 and reply to buyers through the chat. If you have questions about your paperwork, contact the IndCars99 team and confirm the process for your state with your RTO.

Frequently asked questions

Is an RC enough to sell a used car in India?

The RC is essential, but it is not enough on its own. You also need valid insurance, a PUC certificate, ID proof and the signed transfer forms. If there is a loan, the loan closure papers are needed as well.

What is Form 29 and who files it?

Form 29 is the notice of transfer of ownership, and the seller files it with the RTO. It tells the authority that the car has changed hands. The buyer then applies for the transfer using Form 30.

Can I sell a car without the original RC?

Selling without the original RC is risky and can stop the transfer. Contact your RTO to learn how to apply for a duplicate RC. Do not agree to a sale until the paperwork is resolved.

Do I need a NOC to sell my car?

A No Objection Certificate (NOC) is needed for some transfers, such as an inter-state move, where Form 28 is typically used. For a sale within the same state, the requirement depends on the RTO. Confirm the exact requirement before the handover.

What if my car has a loan but I want to sell it?

You can sell a financed car, but the loan must be closed and the financier must release the hypothecation. Ask the financier for the closure letter and the RC release process. Keep the written proof with your transfer documents.

How long should I keep sale documents after the transfer?

Keep copies of the sale agreement, the transfer forms and the acknowledgements for your own records. Store them safely for a reasonable period in case the RTO or the buyer asks for them. Check with your RTO if you are unsure how long to keep them.
